Fashion Doll Quarterly Spring 2009 issue. Cover: The New AvantGuards The Yin & Yang of Sexy by Carol Roth What is sexy? Is it the overtly provocative…slinky, suggestive and almost carnal in its look and feel? Or is it rather an understated sophistication…subdued yet extremely powerful, radiating a seductive intensity? Is sexy hot or is it cool? Is it embodied by voluptuous womanly curves or by a sleek and strong silhouette? Jason Wu doesn’t answer these seeming paradoxes, but rather gives us a resounding “yes” by juxtaposing the elements of both masculine and feminine sexuality in his latest AvantGuards fashion doll creations. For those unfamiliar with the AvantGuards, Integrity Toys introduced these fashion forward females conceived by Jason Wu in 2007. Dubbed “Fashion Metamorphs”, these fully articulated 16-inch vinyl dolls have had the collecting community a buzz. Collectors have been raving about the dolls’ more than 20 points of articulation, including articulation at the head, shoulders, elbows, waist, under the bust, upper thighs and knees. Even the toes and fingers are articulated, with each doll coming with two sets of removable hands and feet, as well as fashion wigs and haute couture clothing and accessories; the posing and play opportunities with each AvantGuards doll is endless. The play value of the AvantGuards was key to the line’s conception. They are the first dolls featuring this type of articulation made from a vinyl and plastic material. The material is similar to that of Integrity’s highly popular Fashion Royalty dolls, however, the AvantGuards utilize brand new luminous skin tones that were matched to resin to enhance the way the doll looks in person and in photographs. This creates a unique value proposition combining the look and feel of what was previously only achieved with resin dolls with the durability and mobility of a vinyl doll– not to mention a much more attractive price point that drives home the value. While the first collection of AvantGuards (three dolls, which included LiveWire, Lush and Eclectic) drew inspiration from the glamorous disco days of Studio 54, Wu explores the duality of masculine/feminine dressing in the current collection. In fact, the collection was inspired by the interplay of the masculine and feminine. Androgyny, on one hand, wears a razor-sharp black brocade suit that plays with menswear elements. Her silk tulle mask is part bondage and part lingerie. On the other hand, Aphrodisiac is all-out glam with over-the-top smoky eyes, blood red lips and mile-high red patent platform skyscraper heels. Both exude the concept of “sexy”, but from two different perspectives.
