This Barbie doll was made to commemorate the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997. It demonstrates the full attire worn by the Dowager Empress Tz’u-his, who reigned from 1861-1908, near the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). This was the last dynasty and marked a turbulent time in Chinese history. Toward the end of her reign, the Dowager Empress attempted to bring China into line with European countries; she established schools for both boys and girls where Chinese and Western subjects were taught.
The doll shows the way Chinese dress was worn in the past. There are four-toed dragon motifs on her satin coat or Chao Pao, and she is wearing a Manchu cap or Chao Guan, green earrings and green and yellow necklaces. Underneath her robe, she is wearing a yellow Chao Qua, a jacquard dress with mandarin collar. Her hands are hidden by long sleeves, as was the Chinese custom.
